Sudeley Castle is undeniably a beautiful attraction all year round. Much like Westonbirt Arboretum though, you’ll see it in a whole new light at Christmas as the grounds and castle are creatively illuminated during their Spectacle of Light. Fans of fairy lights and disco balls will be in their element.
Sudeley’s lawn is carpeted with a rainbow of vibrant parasols, walls and trees are colourfully uplit, and the Queen’s Garden is swathed in a stunning fairy light net. As you walk around the grounds, you’ll find a magical experience around every corner; the lighting has been cleverly designed to enhance and accentuate the castle’s natural beauty. Put simply, it’s Disney’s Fantasia meets the Hogwart’s Christmas Feast.
Accompanying the lights is a perfectly soaring soundtrack that fills every corner of the impressive grounds. Highlights include the title song from American Beauty and the regally appropriate Gloriana (it’s the theme to ITV’s Victoria; her predecessor Queen Katherine Parr is buried at Sudeley).
Who is it aimed at?
Whilst it is certainly a magical, romantic experience for grown ups, younger visitors are catered for too. The lights and sounds are cool enough but to heighten the experience, don’t miss the dragon’s lair, with rolling smoke and a fabulous story teller.
New for this year are little huts dotted around the grounds with warming winter beverages and hot food. We had our first mulled cider of the season which hit the spot but there are handmade burgers, pulled pork baps and hot chocolates to keep you going too. There’s also a little gift shop too if you want any souvenirs to remember the experience.
When can I see the Spectacle of Light?
The Spectacle of Light is on 8 – 10, 15 – 23, and 27 – 30 December. It’s located at Sudeley Castle near Winchcombe on the outskirts of Cheltenham in the Cotswolds. Some tickets are available on the gate but we’d recommend booking in advance to guarantee your tickets. You’ll save 10% too! Entry slots are timed to make sure you don’t feel too crowded; you’ll probably want to allow yourself an hour or two to wander around, and enjoy the festive atmosphere!
