Opera. Beer. Both equally brilliant on their own, but you probably wouldn’t consider them a perfect pairing. However, you’d be wrong.
Hillside Brewery recently hosted the Pop Up Opera Company for the second time after a roaring success last year, and I can assure you that they complement each other perfectly. From the opening scene of Bellini’s “I Capuleti ei Montecchi” to the emotional final ending, the small cast delivered an intimate spectacle. Something that could never be recreated in a large theatre. Having a soprano sing 6 feet from your face is an exceptionally powerful experience You simply have to hear to believe. The simple set is used creatively and ensures that the focus remains firmly on the singers, leaving you tense on the edge of your seat.
The Pop Up Opera Company is funded entirely from ticket sales. Their aim is to bring opera to those who would never normally have the chance or inclination to attend. Whilst they may never make millions from this approach, their passion for sharing opera shines through and I am pretty sure they would do it regardless.
The opera took place in the Hillside’s shiny new events barn which is an awesome, light and airy space. It would be ideal as a fun wedding venue, particularly if you have already brewed the beer for your wedding there, and also hosts other events that are not synonymous with beer such as a mother and baby fitness class with the lovely Cheltenham Fit Mama.
What’s more, there is a great bar. You can keep refreshed with Hillside Brewery’s tasty beers, Willy’s Cider and plenty more besides. You can read more about Hillside Brewery on a previous blog post.
Where can I see the Pop Up Opera Company?
The Pop Up Opera Company are now touring around the country. I am sure they will be popping back up at Hillside Brewery again soon. When they do, make sure you don’t miss it, and we’ll see you there! In the meantime, Hillside Brewery’s infamous Beer Festival returns on 13th May so make sure you don’t miss out.
